A carp reel a reel should be chosen with great care and not on an improvisation. Several criteria should be taken into account to find a reel suitable for a 10-foot rod.

The uninitiated can easily get lost in the mass of information on the technical criteria for finding a suitable carp reel. Let’s remember that the reel is an essential device for fishing. Mounted above the rod handle, the accessory is used to unwind and reel in the line. There are three types of reels: fixed-spool, spinning-spool and centrepin. The fixed spool version has a rotor whose function is to wind the fishing line onto a stationary spool. The spinning reel models have a moving spool. The centrepin reel is a minimalist device without a mechanical brake. It can be recognised by the flattened shape of its spool and its large size.

Selection criteria for a carp reel

The use of a suitable reel guarantees the catching of good carp. For experienced anglers, the first selection criterion is the strength of the device. The strength is related to the composition. Composite materials offer the best performance in terms of strength and durability. As far as metal models are concerned, aluminium reels are the only ones that are interesting because of their lightness.

The retrieve speed or ratio is also a determining criterion. It indicates the ratio between the number of revolutions of the crank and the reel. For example, a ratio of 4. 8:1 means that one turn of the crank causes the reel spool to make more than four turns. A high ratio makes it easier to retrieve fishing line. Then there is the question of braking. As carp are very quick to catch, the reel must have a brake that can channel the force of the animal. A power of six to eight kilograms for the brake is sufficient for a carp reel.

The ideal reel for a 10-foot rod

The reel is not the only accessory that is subject to specific selection criteria. The choice of the carp rod is not improvised either. The flexibility and the resistance of the tool are determining parameters for carp fishing. The rod must be flexible enough to follow the movements of the fish and strong enough to resist them.

A 10 foot long rod is mainly used for carp fishing from a boat. Some experienced anglers also use them for prowling. The diameter of the leader ring for this length of rod is usually 30 mm. For such characteristics, the carp reel does not need to have a high storage capacity. A 10-foot rod is convenient for close quarters fishing, it does not require a considerable amount of line storage. A reel with a capacity of 200 metres is sufficient for a rod of this length. Upgrading to a reel longer than 200 metres is not recommended for a 10-foot rod.
